colour help

Post by Gallien Cavies on Mon Feb 08, 2010 10:06 am

I am struggling to decide what colour one of my coronet boars is. Argente I am asuming as he has ruby eyes and his coat is either ticked lilac or slate with orange and he has an orange belly

Do you have a picture Sam? What were his parents?

Argente's usually have pink eyes I think, i'm not sure if some variants have ruby eyes?

Fernando has red eyes doesnt he. I would guess at maybe lilac and gold argente, but would need pic.

Fernado looks as though he has pink eyes from the pic, so that would make throwing an Argente more likely (but of course the sow would have had to carry pink eye too. And fernado would have to be an agouti based, which is possible.

Hard to actually guess what he is because there could be a lot of possibilities without seeing a pic.

Well I was thinking lalac and gold, but his belly colour is very orange, I know its the same name for gold in long hairs but trying to describe it. will see how good the light is when I get home. Do all argentes have a solid colour belly?

Argentes are just very basically a pink eyed agouti. So if they happen to be a bi or tricolour at the same time they can have "patchy" bellies. They can also have a solid belly.

I just looked and see that Fernando is a Trazinah pig, she did have a few argente coronets at one time, so dad is quite possibly what I call a hidden one, he could throw argente.
Much like my p.e golden rex sow put to a lilac boar only ever throws argentes 100%!

The baby certainly sounds argente by your description, and it would have to come from dads side too if mum is slate, but the slate may cause the eye colour to be more ruby than pink, which fits too. A few of my argente rex are what i call ruby eyed argente, not quite right but it doesn't matter in the coated breeds and they are pretty.

Carole is correct. Any PE golden will produce 100% argente (lilac/gold) when put to a lilac, as long as the golden is AA. Slates have ruby eyes and when combined with the PE from the lilac you get that inbetweeny red colour.

Mum is a Trazinah pig also. Dad is down as buff, cream and white on his pedigree which I didnt think was possiable??

Oh here is the little lad, he isnt staying but just wanted to know what colour he is. Pics are not that great as it was a rather dull morning today. You can see a little argente around his face the rest has been chewed before I got him
